Massive fire engulfs mattress factory in Jalandhar, blaze spreads through residential area; one critically injured
PTC News Desk: A fire broke out at the Modi Mattress factory on Basti Peer Dad Road in Jalandhar. Around 30 employees were working at the factory when the incident took place. At around 9 am, people suddenly noticed smoke emanating from the factory and informed the fire brigade. The workers also rushed out of the building to save their lives.
The fire intensified because chemicals were stored inside the factory, making it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. A short circuit is being considered as a possible reason.
A man named Keshav said one person was injured in the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The flames also spread to residential area nearby.
According to Keshav, the police administration was informed about the incident, but police reached the spot nearly an hour later. He also claimed that no factory operator had visited the site to assess the situation.
A concrete roof slab also collapsed during the fire. Keshav appealed to the administration to shift the factory out of the residential area.
He said a similar fire had broken out at a factory in the area around 10 years ago. At that time, factory workers had reportedly said that the unit would be moved out of the residential area and used only as a warehouse. However, mattress manufacturing is still being carried out at the factory.
Keshav also claimed that a large number of commercial LPG cylinders are stored inside the factory.
