Parvinder Jhota cremation LIVE UPDATES: Anti-drug activist's post mortem delayed, cremation likely to take place today
PTC News Desk: The last rites of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota could not be performed on Friday as his postmortem examination at PGI, Chandigarh, was delayed. His family members said the cremation is now likely to take place on Saturday.
A committee comprising Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian had suggested that the last rites be held on November 6, after the postmortem at PGI.
Soon after the body reached PGI, Jhota’s father, Bhim Singh, turned down any government compensation or job. He said the family wants neither money nor employment for any member and that their fight is against drugs and will go on. He also began a hunger strike and demanded the transfer of the Mansa SSP.
People gathered at the protest site in Mansa continued to wait for updates on the postmortem and cremation. However, by evening, it became clear that the cremation would not take place on Friday. Preparations had already been made for the last rites, as the family expected the body to reach Mansa on time after the examination.
The family agreed to the postmortem after 24 days of protests over Jhota’s murder. His body was taken from Mansa Civil Hospital to Chandigarh around midnight on Thursday.
As the postmortem was being conducted at PGI, Parvinder’s father, Bhim Singh, expressed anger over claims circulating on social media that the family had agreed to the cremation after the Punjab government offered Rs 2 crore in compensation and a government job to Jhota’s wife.
