SGPC General House called on November 20 to elect new president, office-bearers

PTC Web Desk: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called its General House on November 20 for the annual election of its president and other office-bearers. The decision was taken at a meeting of the executive committee chaired by SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.

The session will begin at 12 noon at Sardar Teja Singh Samundri Hall in the SGPC headquarters. Members will elect the president, senior vice-president, junior vice-president, general secretary and executive committee members.

Murder of anti-drug activist condemned

The executive committee also passed several other resolutions. One of them strongly condemned the murder of Parvinder Singh Jhota, who had been campaigning against drugs. The resolution said the spread of drugs in Punjab is a serious concern, but alleged that the government is going after those who raise their voice against drugs instead of acting against the drug trade.

To honour his struggle to save Punjab’s youth and the sacrifice he made for the cause, the committee approved placing his portrait in the Central Sikh Museum at the Sri Darbar Sahib complex.

Action against Mansa protesters criticised

The committee also condemned the police action in Mansa, where an FIR was registered against about 40 youths who took part in a recent anti-drug protest. Some of them were arrested. The committee also objected to reports that turbans of Sikhs were pulled off and women were mistreated during the action. In its resolution, the committee urged the Punjab government to cancel the FIR against the youths immediately, release those arrested without delay and take strict action against those involved in the drug trade instead of targeting people who speak out against it.

Expressing grief over the death of youth Manpreet Singh, who died of electric shock while removing a poster after joining the protest, the committee approved Rs 2.5 lakh in financial help to his family.

It also cleared Rs 50,000 each for 479 Sikh “dharmi faujis”, the soldiers who revolted in protest against the June 1984 attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib by the then Congress government.

Besides this, the committee decided to give SGPC employees a 3 per cent dearness allowance.
