Chandigarh: Two months after her death, legendary Punjabi folk singer late Gurmeet Bawa has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third-highest civilian honour. Gurmeet Bawa passed away on November 21, 2021, following a prolonged illness at the age of 77 in Amritsar. She was conferred with the award for her immense contribution to the field of art. In 1991, she was bestowed with the state award by the Punjab government. Likewise, she was awarded Sangeet Puraskar by the Punjab Natak Akademi, the national Devi Ahilya Award by the Madhya Pradesh government in 2002, and the Shiromani Gayika Award by the Punjabi Language Department in 2008. Her death left a big void in the Punjabi music industry. On Gurmeet Bawa being awarded Padma Bhushan posthumously, former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal wrote: "It's an honor for Punjab as late Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa is awarded Padma Bhushan." "Greetings to Baba Iqbal Singh & Shri Prem Singh for receiving the Padma Shri for remarkable contribution as social workers & Prof Harmohinder Singh Bedi in the field of lit & edu," she added.
