PTC Web Desk:  Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom has stepped down as India's chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics, citing personal reasons. She made the announcement on Friday, explaining that she was "left with no choice" but to relinquish the role. She conveyed her decision in a letter to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha.

Mary Kom expressed regret over her decision, noting that she considers it an honour to serve her country in any way possible. She stated that she was initially mentally prepared for the responsibility, but found herself unable to continue due to personal reasons. Despite her resignation, Mary Kom affirmed her commitment to cheering on her country and its athletes competing in the Paris Olympics, carrying high expectations for their performance.

The IOA had announced Mary Kom's appointment as chef-de-mission on March 21. In her role, she was to oversee the logistics and management of India's contingent for July 26 to August 11 Games. Her extensive experience and achievements in the sport, including a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics, made her an ideal candidate for the position.

IOA president PT Usha expressed sadness at Mary Kom's departure, acknowledging her contributions and understanding her decision. She emphasised her respect for Kom's request and assured her of continued support from the IOA. She also called for the legendary boxer's privacy to be respected during this time.

PT Usha revealed that she will be making appropriate consultations to find a suitable replacement for Mary Kom in the role of chef-de-mission. She noted that an announcement regarding the new appointment will be made in due course.

Mary Kom's resignation is a loss for the Indian contingent, given her vast experience and leadership qualities.  Mary Kom's impressive career includes numerous accolades, including her six world championships and her role as a trailblazer for women's boxing in India. Her decision to step down from the chef-de-mission role is undoubtedly a difficult one, but her legacy as an inspiring athlete and leader remains intact.

As the IOA prepares to find Kom's replacement, attention will remain on her ongoing involvement with Indian sports and the athletes' community, even as she steps back from this specific responsibility.
