Paris Olympics 2024: Why Reetika Hooda lose wrestling quarterfinals despite score being 1-1 level?
Paris Olympics 2024: India suffered another loss in women's wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics as Reetika Hooda was defeated by Kyrgyzstan's Aiperi Medet Kyzy in the quarterfinals of the women's 76 kg freestyle wrestling.
After Reetika gained the first point by passivity in the first period, Medet Kyzy made an incredible comeback in the second round of the game by forcing Reetika to defend and collecting a point by passivity. Since Medet Kyzy was the last wrestler to win a point, she won on countback.
Still, the 21-year-old from Rohtak, Haryana, has a chance to earn the bronze medal in the repechage round if Aiperi Medet Kyzy wins her semifinal match and advances to the final.
Earlier, Reetika defeated two-time European Championship medallist Bernadette Nagy of Hungary 12-2 due to technical advantage to go to the quarterfinals.
In 2023, Reetika became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the U-23 World Championships, defeating Kennedy Blades of the United States, who went on to represent the United States at the Olympics.
Reetika, a bronze medallist at the 2023 Asian Championships in Astana, moved up from the 72kg weight class to the 76kg category, which is on the Olympic roster, after years of competing at a lower level.
Reetika will now wait for Kyzy to enter the final, which will offer her a chance to compete in the repechage stage.
If she doesn't, India's Paris Games campaign will end with six medals and no gold.
