Punjab Assembly elections 2022: President of Shiromani Akali Dal, Sukhbir Singh Badal contested the Punjab Assembly Elections from the Jalalabad constituency. He is the son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
Sukhbir Badal was a member of the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha, representing Faridkot, and has served as the Union Minister of State for Industry (1998 to 1999). He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha (2001 to 2004).
In 2004, he was re-elected from Faridkot and became the President of Shiromani Akali Dal in January 2008. A year later in January 2009, he was sworn as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. He was not a Member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha at that time.
He resigned in July 2009, when the six-month term for contesting assembly elections had expired, during which he had not run in any elections. After winning by-elections in the Jalalabad Assembly Constituency, he was re-appointed Deputy Chief Minister in August 2009. However, he lost the battle as he bagged only 60,525 votes.
