Lufthansa diversion: Husband wife fight mid-air forces flight diversion to Delhi; check details
New Delhi, November 29: A Lufthansa flight bound for Bangkok faced an unexpected diversion to Delhi due to a disruptive incident involving a German man and his Thai wife, resulting in a mid-air altercation that prompted the flight's rerouting.
Departing from Munich, the flight—Lufthansa LH772—was en route to Bangkok before it encountered turbulence of a different kind. A dispute erupted between the couple, escalating into a loud and concerning exchange, prompting the pilots to alert air traffic control and reroute the flight to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
Reports indicate that the disagreement between the German man and his Thai wife became disruptive, leading the wife to seek assistance from the flight crew, citing feeling threatened by her husband's behaviour.
The aircraft initially sought clearance to land at an airport in Pakistan, which was denied. Subsequently, the decision was made to divert the flight to IGI Airport. Upon landing, airport security officials removed the husband from the aircraft for further assessment and handling.
According to sources within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the man has expressed regret for the situation and has engaged with airport authorities. Discussions between security personnel and the German embassy are ongoing to address the incident.
As authorities deliberate the course of action, both Delhi police and the paramilitary force CISF remain present at the scene. A decision is pending regarding the man's potential handover to Indian security agencies or his repatriation to Germany.
Additionally, it's reported that the Lufthansa aircraft will resume its journey to Thailand once necessary checks and cooling down of its tires are completed following the unforeseen diversion.
