Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Devotees across India will celebrate Krishna Janmashtami on Friday, September 4, 2026, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hindu tradition.
The festival is observed on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Lord Krishna is traditionally regarded as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his birth is celebrated as a symbol of the victory of good over evil.
Krishna is also remembered for his teachings in Bhagavad Gita, particularly his message about duty, wisdom and living a purposeful life.

According to Drik Panchang, Janmashtami this year falls on September 4 and marks the 5,253rd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.
The most important worship period is around midnight, which is traditionally associated with Krishna's birth.

Janmashtami 2026 Parana time
Devotees who observe a fast for Janmashtami traditionally break it after the appropriate Tithi and Nakshatra conditions are completed.
As per the Dharma Shastra-based calculation cited by Drik Panchang, Parana is after 6.01 am on September 5, once Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have ended before sunrise.
In many places, however, devotees follow the customary practice of ending the fast after the midnight celebration. Under this tradition, Parana can be performed after 12.43 am M on September 5, following the Nishita Puja.
The exact practice can vary depending on local customs and the Panchang followed by devotees.
Why is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated?
Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Krishna in Mathura. According to Hindu tradition, Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva while they were imprisoned by Devaki's brother, King Kansa.
Kansa had become fearful after a prophecy warned him that Devaki's eighth child would eventually cause his downfall. In an attempt to prevent the prophecy, he imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed their first six children.
Krishna was born as their eighth child at midnight. His birth is associated with a series of miraculous events. The prison guards are said to have fallen asleep, while the chains and prison doors opened, allowing Vasudeva to carry the newborn child out of the prison.
How Krishna reached Gokul
To protect Krishna from Kansa, Vasudeva carried him through the night towards Gokul. According to the traditional account, he crossed the Yamuna while carrying the infant Krishna to safety.
Krishna was eventually raised in Gokul by Nanda and Yashoda, where many of the stories associated with his childhood took place.
Today, Janmashtami is marked by midnight prayers, devotional singing, temple celebrations, fasting and the ceremonial celebration of Krishna's birth. In several parts of India, devotees also organise Dahi Handi events as part of the festivities.
For millions of devotees, the festival is not only a celebration of Krishna's birth but also a reminder of his teachings on faith, duty, righteousness and the triumph of good over evil.
