PTC News Desk: A protest over growing stray dog menace in Maharashtra's Nashik took an unexpected turn when Yuva Sena workers released puppies into a municipal office and released them on the chief officer’s table.
The protest by members of the Yuva Sena (UBT), the youth wing of the Shiv Sena (UBT), took place on Wednesday.
Dramatic visuals from the scene Vikram Randhave, district chief of Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shiv Sena, releasing the puppies on the table of chief officer Dheeraj Bhamre at the Nagar Panchayat office in Niphad. The puppies were placed inside sacks before they were released into the municipal office.
The workers staged an agitation to highlight what they claimed administration's failure to take significant action on repeated complaints about stray dogs.
The protest was held to highlight complaints about stray dogs in and around Niphad town. Protesters said the number of stray dogs had increased, causing problems for children, senior citizens, women and motorists.
They alleged that several people had been bitten by stray dogs and claimed that repeated complaints to the administration had not led to any concrete action. Randhave also raised the issue during the ongoing Ganeshotsav celebrations, saying the presence of stray dogs had created fear among people visiting Ganesh pandals.
He demanded immediate sterilisation drives, proper arrangements to catch stray dogs and effective measures to control their population.
Criticising the civic administration, Randhave said the issue had been raised for several days but no meaningful action had been taken. He accused officials of being more focused on the tendering process than on resolving civic problems.
Randhave warned that if the administration failed to take action, he would stage the protest again and release stray dogs inside the Chief Officer’s office in the presence of citizens.
A similar unusual protest was reported last month in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa, where a man wearing a dog mask was brought to a public hearing to highlight alleged irregularities in the municipal corporation’s stray-dog sterilisation programme.
