Vehicles with small VIP numbers to be confiscated in Punjab, says Transport Minister Laljit Bhullar

Chandigarh, June 24: Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has issued orders to confiscate vehicles with small VIP numbers. The Punjab Cabinet minister said such numbers on vehicles sans district codes were a security threat. These small VIP numbers on vehicles were banned on December 30, 2020, however, no action was taken against the defaulters. However, when the Motor Vehicle Act was enacted in 1989, new series with PB was introduced with the code of the district written along. From such registration numbers of vehicles, it is easier to locate where these are registered. The photo in the backdrop is for representational purpose only.[/caption] Issuing the orders, Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said small VIP numbers did not meet the criteria of the district code, therefore action would be taken against vehicles being run with numbers registered after June 12, 1989. The photo is for representational purpose only.[/caption] The Punjab Cabinet minister said those still using the old series of small VIP numbers could surrender the same and get another fancy number issued, failing which vehicles with such numbers would be challaned and confiscated. The minister said," Influential people often transfer these old series numbers from one vehicle to another, which is a major security threat. Therefore, the orders had been passed in this regard and action would be taken against the defaulters.
