Ajnala attack case: Punjab Police formally arrest Amritpal Singh after NSA detention ends, get two-day remand

Ajnala attack case: Punjab Police on Thursday formally arrested Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh in connection with Ajnala attack case. He was presented in Ajnala Court virtually where court sent him to two-day police remand.

He was immediately arrested by the Punjab Police after his NSA detention expired on April 22.

The high court permitted the state government to keep Amritpal lodged at the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail instead of shifting him to Punjab, citing law and order concerns.

As per the court’s directions, all proceedings in the case — including the ongoing police remand and any subsequent judicial custody — will be carried out via video conferencing.

This arrangement allows the main accused to take part in the legal process without the logistical challenges and security risks involved in physically transporting him to Amritsar. Amritpal is expected to be produced before the court again on Saturday after the completion of his initial remand period.

Ajnala incident of 2023

The Ajnala case dates back to February 2023, when Amritpal and his supporters allegedly broke through police barricades and entered the police station with weapons in an attempt to free one of their associates. A clash with the police also took place during the incident. Amritpal has been named as the main accused in the case.
