PTC Web desk: A political row erupted on Tuesday after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge made a controversial 'terrorist' remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi while criticising the AIADMK-BJP alliance ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Chennai, Kharge questioned the AIADMK’s decision to ally with the BJP and, in the course of his remarks, used the word “terrorist” for the Prime Minister. His comment quickly drew sharp reactions from BJP leaders.

Facing backlash, Kharge later clarified that his statement was meant to suggest that the Prime Minister “threatens” or “terrorises” political opponents. He alleged that central agencies such as the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate are being used against opposition parties.

Kharge also criticised the Prime Minister’s record in office, accusing him of failing to deliver for the public over the past several years. He urged voters in Tamil Nadu to support the Congress-DMK alliance, saying it stands for social justice, secularism and the protection of the state’s rights. He also referred to Rahul Gandhi as a leader who represents these values.

The BJP strongly condemned Kharge’s remarks. Union Minister Piyush Goyal called the statement “shameful” and demanded an apology, saying it insulted a democratically elected Prime Minister and the people of the country.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also criticised the Congress, accusing it of lowering the level of political discourse by resorting to personal attacks instead of engaging in meaningful debate.

The controversy comes just days before Tamil Nadu’s 234-member Assembly goes to polls in a single phase on April 23, with results scheduled to be announced on May 4.
