PTC Web Desk: Canada is introducing fresh immigration initiatives, extending temporary visas to people with connections in Gaza, along with Israelis and Palestinians already residing in the country.

Expressing concerns about the safety of Canadians' relatives in Gaza, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller declared on Thursday that the government would issue three-year temporary resident visas to extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

These measures aim to facilitate family reunification and provide refuge to those feeling unsafe in the conflict-ridden region. Miller assured priority processing for permanent residency applications of Palestinians due to the dire conditions in Gaza.

Speaking in Ottawa, Miller highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, citing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Despite Canada's evacuation efforts, uncertainties persist regarding further evacuations due to the volatile situation.

Miller stressed Canada's inability to control departures from Gaza via the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, despite continued engagement with consular staff for potential evacuations.

The government's decision follows pressure from families and political parties, with the NDP welcoming the move while acknowledging Canadian families' persistence.

The conflict, sparked by Hamas' attack in Israel on October 7 and subsequent retaliatory measures, resulted in casualties and substantial Palestinian deaths. Canada pledges to collaborate with regional partners to assist its citizens, residents, and eligible family members.
