First case of vocal cord paralysis post COVID-19 infection reported in new study

New Delhi, December 26: A groundbreaking study from Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital in the U.S. has revealed the first recorded instance of vocal cord paralysis in a teenager following a COVID-19 infection. This discovery by physician-researchers points to the paralysis as a potential consequence of the viral infection, expanding the spectrum of known nervous system-related complications in both children and adults.

The patient, a 15-year-old female with a history of asthma and anxiety, sought emergency care 13 days after being diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. She presented acute shortness of breath, prompting an endoscopic examination that unveiled bilateral vocal cord paralysis, indicating immobility in both vocal cords within the larynx.

Dr. Danielle Reny Larrow, the study's first author, emphasised the importance of considering this newfound complication in any child displaying breathing, speaking, or swallowing difficulties post-COVID-19 diagnosis. Such symptoms, often mistaken for common ailments like asthma, could now be linked to this emerging complication.

The hospital conducted an extensive array of tests, including blood work, imaging, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and consultations across various medical specialties. Despite attempts at speech therapy, the patient's condition persisted, leading to a tracheostomy to ease breathing difficulties. Remarkably, she remained reliant on the tracheostomy for over 13 months, indicating a potential long-term aspect of this nerve-related complication.

The team highlighted the rarity of this case, being the first reported instance of a teenager experiencing post-viral neuropathy causing vocal cord paralysis. While adults have reported similar complications post-COVID-19 infection, this study sheds light on an unprecedented manifestation in adolescents.

The insertion of the tracheostomy remained in place for 15 months, a period that underscored the potential lasting impact of such complications. However, they were eventually able to remove it following a case report submission. This groundbreaking study brings attention to a novel and concerning complication of COVID-19, urging vigilance in recognising and managing potential nerve-related repercussions, particularly in younger patients.
