'Israel to secure Gaza-Egypt border, expects prolonged war': Netanyahu

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: The Israel-Hamas conflict has led to a devastating toll on Palestinian lives, with over 21,000 fatalities and 56,000 injuries reported. On the Israeli side, around 1,200 casualties occurred following a Hamas raid in southern Israel on October 7, resulting in approximately 240 people being taken hostage.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserts Israel's determination to reclaim control of the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt. This move expands Israel's mission beyond neutralizing Hamas and is anticipated to extend the duration of the conflict, with Netanyahu indicating an expectation for months of hostilities.

The United Nations reports an influx of tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians into the overwhelmed town of Rafah in southern Gaza. The ongoing war has forced approximately 85 per cent of Gaza's 2.3 million residents from their homes, raising concerns about the potential destruction of the southern region mirroring that of the north.

As tensions persist in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the region grapples with the profound human cost and the uncertain trajectory of the prolonged military engagement.

PM Netanyahu outlines strategic goals and duration of ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict

In the latest developments of the Israel-Hamas war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Saturday the imperative for Israel to control the border zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. He emphasised that the Philadelphi Corridor, specifically the southern stoppage point of Gaza, must be under Israeli control to ensure effective demilitarisation.

Netanyahu, addressing a news conference, underscored the necessity of the Philadelphi Corridor being in Israeli hands, highlighting its role in achieving the demilitarization objective sought by the Israeli government. The Prime Minister provided a sobering assessment of the ongoing conflict, stating that the war is currently at its peak, involving engagements on multiple fronts. Netanyahu acknowledged the complexity of the situation, indicating that achieving victory would necessitate a significant amount of time. Netanyahu, echoing the sentiments of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff, conveyed the expectation that the war would persist for many more months. This projection suggests a prolonged military engagement with an undisclosed timeline.

Netanyahu's statements shed light on Israel's strategic objectives in the Gaza-Egypt border zone and offer insights into the anticipated duration of the Israel-Hamas conflict, emphasizing a commitment to demilitarisation as a crucial aspect of the overall mission.

The Hezbollah militant organisation has confirmed the death of one of its fighters, identified as Ali Ahmed Saad (Jibril), in a strike on the southern Lebanon border town of Bint Jbeil. Saad lost his life during Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon on Saturday afternoon. The strikes were a retaliatory response to repeated attacks on northern Israel.

Contrary to earlier reports categorising him as a civilian, Hezbollah asserts that Saad was killed "on the road to Jerusalem," employing a euphemism to commemorate its fighters.

IDF announces demolition of homes of Hamas operatives involved in West Bank attack

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have declared their intention to demolish the residences of three Hamas operatives responsible for a recent shooting attack at a West Bank checkpoint. The attack resulted in the death of a soldier and injuries to several others. Simultaneously, an Israeli strike in Gaza reportedly claimed the life of Abdul Fattah Amin Maali, a Hamas armed wing commander and a former close associate of Yahya Ayyash, a founding member of the al-Qassam Brigades.

Retributive Action: The IDF's decision to demolish the homes of the three Hamas operatives is in response to their involvement in the shooting attack at a West Bank checkpoint, which resulted in casualties among Israeli soldiers.

Targeted Strike in Gaza: Abdul Fattah Amin Maali, known for his association with Yahya Ayyash, was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza. Ayyash is recognized as one of the founders of the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas terror group.

Prime Minister's Statement: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed ongoing negotiations for the release of hostages, emphasizing that a viable deal would be pursued if possible. However, he cautioned against raising exaggerated expectations and affirmed his commitment to dealing with the Hamas organisation.

IDF's Counteraction in Lebanon: The IDF spokesperson revealed that a significant number of Hezbollah rockets fired at Israel had fallen short inside Lebanon. Approximately 80 percent of the projectiles launched the previous day landed within Lebanese territory. The IDF continues to target and disrupt Hezbollah's presence in southern Lebanon.

The developments underscore the complexity and intensification of security challenges in the region, with Israel responding robustly to security threats emanating from both the West Bank and Lebanon.
