Over 20 mild earthquakes jolt Karachi, experts warn of potential big one
PTC News Desk: At least 20 earthquakes have rattled Pakistan's biggest city karachi in 48 hours triggering concern, panic and a flurry of forecasts. Karachi has recorded at least 21 low- to moderate-intensity tremors -- ranging from magnitude 2.1 to 3.6 -- in less than 48 hours, but experts remain divided on whether a larger, more dangerous quake is imminent.
The strongest tremor to date, a magnitude 3.6 quake on Sunday night, led to a partial collapse of the Malir Jail wall, resulting in the escape of 216 inmates.
While the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has urged calm, some independent voices are sounding the alarm. “The earthquake tremors of mild intensity will continue for the next two to three days, and the situation will improve as the intensity of the quakes will reduce,” PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan reassured citizens.
As the city endured ongoing tremors, social media buzzed with speculation about an impending major earthquake. The discussion grew more intense when a private Pakistani geologist claimed he had accurately predicted the recent quakes in Karachi and warned of a significant earthquake expected on Friday and Saturday night.
Interestingly, both the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported no seismic activity in the Karachi area since Sunday, casting doubt on the effectiveness of local monitoring and reporting systems.
