Pakistan left red-faced after sending expired relief material to cyclone-hit Sri Lanka
PTC News Desk: Pakistan's attempt to express solidarity with flood-hit Sri Lanka turned into diplomatic embarassment after photos of Colombo-bound relief packages showed expiry dates surfaced on social media, triggering a wave of criticism. The picture were shared by the Pakistan High Commission, which showed already passed expiry dates.
The backlash erupted within hours of the High Commission posting photographs of the consignment on X, celebrating Islamabad’s support.
The pictures showed packages with label “EXP: 10/2024”, prompting widepsread accusations that Pakistan had shipped expiry products to the nation already grappling with one of the worst natural calamities.
Always standing together Pakistan stands with Sri Lanka today and always,” the High Commission wrote while announcing the delivery of relief material meant for displaced families.
The pictures have drawn massive criticism with social media users accusing Pakistan of mocking disaster victims by sending material already passed its shelf life. Some users also questioned why the mission had publicly posted photographs without inspecting the labels.
Islamabad has not issued a clarification so far.
According to local media reports, Pakistan had dispatched 100 tons of relief material accompanied by 45-member Urban Search and Rescue team belonging to the Pakistan Army.
