Toronto (Canada), March 20: A group of unknown men attacked a Sikh student from India in Canada's British Columbia province. The 21-year-old was thrashed and dragged by the hair and his turban was ripped off by the assaulters, media reports said.

Gagandeep Singh was assaulted on his way home on Friday night, according to CTV news.

Councillor Mohini Singh stated that she learned about the attack shortly after it took place and went to see Gagandeep.

"When I saw him, I was horrified. He could only speak softly and could not open his mouth," she was quoted saying by media.

She stated that the young man's eyes were swollen shut and that he was clearly in a lot of pain.

According to the councillor, Gagandeep was on his way home around 10:30 p.m. after grocery shopping when he encountered a group of between 12 and 15 other young people on the bus. It was St. Patrick's Day, and according to Mohini Singh, a rowdy group was on the bus, throwing wigs around.

"They were troubling him and threw the wig at him. He told them not to bother him or he'd call the cops, but they persisted," she stated.

Gagandeep stepped off the bus. "They swarmed him, beat him in his face, ribs, arms, and legs, and then proceeded to grab his turban, pull his hair, and drag him," Mohini Singh said. She further claimed that adding that the group took the turban with them when they left Gagandeep in a pile of "dirty snow" on the side of the road.
