'Tax on Americans': US lawmakers move resolution to end Trump's tariffs on India amid surge in retail prices

PTC News Desk: Three members of the US House of Representatives have challenged President Donald Trump’s decision to impose high tariffs on Indian goods. They have moved a resolution to cancel the national emergency declaration that allowed tariffs to go up to 50 per cent.

The lawmakers said the tariffs are illegal, harmful, and unfairly affect American consumers and businesses. The move was introduced on Friday by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi. Their resolution focuses on the extra 25 per cent tariffs imposed on August 27, 2025, which were added on top of earlier duties, sharply increasing the cost of many Indian products.

Deborah Ross said the tariffs are already hurting people in her home state of North Carolina. She noted that India has strong trade and investment ties with the state, supporting billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs. She warned that the tariffs could damage this important relationship.

Marc Veasey said the tariffs are effectively a tax on ordinary Americans. He described India as a key cultural, economic, and strategic partner and said the duties are adding to the financial pressure on families already dealing with high living costs. Raja Krishnamoorthi also criticised the move, saying the tariffs disrupt supply chains, hurt American workers, and increase prices for consumers. He added that removing them would strengthen economic and security ties between the US and India.

The House action comes after a bipartisan effort in the Senate to limit the President’s use of emergency powers to impose trade restrictions. Lawmakers said the aim is to restore Congress’s authority over trade decisions and improve relations with India.

Trump first imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods on August 1 and later doubled it. He said the move was linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which he claimed was helping fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.
