'We want productive people': US firms can now hire Indian grads under 'gold citizenship' plan
PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump announced that American companies can now hire Indian graduates from U.S. universities under the newly introduced 'gold card' citizenship initiative. This development, seen as a significant advantage for Indian students, follows his Wednesday announcement of the 'gold card'—a pathway to U.S. citizenship for affluent foreign investors prepared to invest $5 million.
Donald Trump also highlighted that the current immigration system has restricted high skilled talented particularly from India.
"A person comes from India, China, Japan, lots of different places, and they go to Harvard, the Wharton School of Finance... they are made job offers, but the offer is immediately rescinded because you have no idea whether that person can stay in the country," he said.
"They go back to India, or they go back to the country where they came from, and they open up a company, and they become billionaires. They're employing thousands of people," he further said.
The Gold Card would also replace the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program which enables foreign investors to obtain Green Cards if they agree to invest a minimum of USD 800,000 in projects located in Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) while also making sure to create at least 10 US jobs. So far Donald Trump has criticised the EB-5 system, calling it outdated and ineffective.
