Washington, June 06: US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state visit to the United States on June 22. Ahead of the visit, the White House responded to concerns about the health of democracy in India under Prime Minister Modi.

John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, reiterated that India is a vibrant democracy and encouraged individuals to visit New Delhi to witness it firsthand.


Kirby highlighted the robust partnership between the United States and India on multiple levels. He mentioned recent announcements made by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin regarding enhanced defense cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, Kirby emphasised the significant economic trade ties between the US and India. Furthermore, he noted India's membership in the Pacific Quad and its vital role as a friend and partner in Indo-Pacific security.

When questioned about the reason for extending a state dinner invitation to Prime Minister Modi, Kirby underscored the importance of India as a strategic partner to the United States. He listed numerous reasons why India holds significance, including bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and addressing various global issues. Kirby expressed the anticipation of President Biden in deepening the partnership and friendship between the two nations.

In response to queries regarding concerns about the health of democracy in India, Kirby reiterated that India is a vibrant democracy that can be witnessed by anyone visiting New Delhi. He acknowledged the importance of discussing the strength and health of democratic institutions during the visit.

The White House official emphasized that expressing concerns is a natural part of any friendship and that the Biden administration does not shy away from addressing concerns with friends around the world. However, he emphasized that the primary purpose of the visit is to strengthen the partnership and friendship between the US and India.
