Amid political crisis, Himachal CM Sukhu accuses BJP of 'Operation Lotus'

PTC News Desk: Amid Himachal Pradesh's political crisis, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed confidence on Friday that his government would last five years. Sukhu also accused Jairam Thakur of attempting to carry out 'Operation Lotus'.

"Our government will continue to function for five years... Jairam Thakur has been busy with 'Operation Lotus' since I became the state's chief minister. Nobody should have such a strong desire for power. People have elected our government, and we will be in power for five years," he stated.

Earlier in the day, Sukhu stated that he would welcome any rebel Congress MLA who wishes to rejoin the party, but that no coercive measures would be used.

"When he's made up his mind, he can come, and we'll welcome him. Forcing someone is not culturally acceptable in Himachal. Hooliganism is not part of Himachal's culture," he added.

Sudhir Sharma, Rajinder Rana, Davinder K Bhutto, Ravi Thakur, Chaitanya Sharma, and Inder Dutt Lakhanpal are the six MLAs who were disqualified for cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Cross-voting resulted in a surprise victory for the BJP's candidate, Harsh Mahajan, in the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Vikramaditya Singh, who resigned as a state minister on Wednesday, continues to keep the Congress leadership guessing.

Following the 2022 Assembly elections, the Congress had 40 MLAs and the BJP had 25 in the 68-member state assembly. The remaining three seats are held by independent candidates.

With the six rebel MLAs disqualified, the house's strength falls from 68 to 62, with 32 serving as the halfway mark. With the loss of 6 MLAs, the Congress now has 34 MLAs, while the BJP, with independents, has 28. The success of the Congress will now depend on its ability to keep the rest of its flock together.
