Rishabh Pant Birthday Special: Cricketer Rishabh Pant revealed the depths of his character just 48 hours after the sudden loss of his beloved father in April 2017. Although his valiant half-century couldn't secure victory for the Delhi Daredevils in their IPL match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, it illuminated a touching story of determination and a father's dreams.
Mere days after bidding a tearful farewell to his father, Rishabh took to the field and scored a courageous 57 runs for the Delhi Daredevils, even though the match ended in defeat.
For Rishabh, the decision to travel to Bangalore was heart-wrenching, not just because of his father's untimely departure but also due to his mother's fragile health following major surgery. The weight of this decision bore heavily on his young shoulders.
Devender Sharma, his coach at Sonnet, recounted, "His maternal grandfather took him aside and asked if he wanted to play. He replied with unwavering determination, 'I will.'"
Tarak Sinha, head coach at Sonnet, stood by Rishabh's choice, stating, "What's happened has happened".
Receiving the devastating news late at night, Rishabh embarked on a journey from Delhi to Roorkee in Uttarakhand reaching his destination by morning. The day after bidding farewell to his father, he began his journey back to Delhi at 8 am, caught a flight to Bangalore, and even attended practice in the evening. His franchise had offered him the option to take all the time he needed.
During his father's last visit to the Sonnet Academy, where Rishabh honed his skills, he beamed with pride at his son's progress. The Pant family had surmounted countless obstacles to secure Rishabh a place in Delhi cricket's premier academy because Roorkee in Uttarakhand offered limited cricketing opportunities. In this journey, Rishabh's mother played an extraordinary role.
Pant's father harbored dreams of witnessing his son become a cricketer, but it was his mother who took charge in Delhi. The two resided at the Moti Bagh Gurdwara, having arrived from Roorkee with no place to call home.
While Rishabh pursued his father's dream on the cricket field, his mother selflessly served at the gurdwara. His dedication remained unswerving, and he quickly made a name for himself in India U-19 , ultimately earning the honour of captaining Delhi.
