US calls for fair legal process in response to Arvind Kejriwal's arrest

PTC Web Desk: The United States (US) Government on Tuesday said they were "closely monitoring" the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and stressed the importance of a "fair, transparent, and timely legal process."

According to news agency Reuters, a spokesperson for the US State Department said, "We encourage a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal."

This reaction from the US Government follows India's summoning of a senior diplomat from the German Embassy to express its objections over comments made by Germany regarding Kejriwal's arrest.

The Germany's foreign affairs spokesperson had issued a statement expressing hope that standards related to the independence of the judiciary and basic democratic principles would be upheld in Arvind Kejriwal's case.

The spokesperson remarked, "...Like anyone facing accusations, Mr Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial. This includes his ability to make use of all available legal avenues without restrictions. The presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and must apply to him [sic]."

Regarding India's protest to Germany, the US State Department spokesperson redirected inquiries to the German Foreign Ministry for comments on their discussions with the Indian government.

AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was subsequently revoked.

While Kejriwal has denied any wrongdoing, his party has labeled his arrest as "political vendetta" by the ruling BJP ahead of the general elections.
