Amid opposition by BJP, Punjab Vidhan Sabha passes resolution against Agnipath scheme

Mohali, June 30: The Punjab Vidhab Sabha, during the Budget session 2022, on Thursday passed a resolution against the Centre's Agnipath recruitment scheme. With this, Punjab has become the only state to have passed a resolution against the recruitment scheme. Moving the resolution, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann termed it a matter of national security. He asked the BJP not to mislead people. He also wanted to know about the status of an 'Agniveer'  who dies on the front or on duty. He said the scheme aimed at instilling discipline and patriotism in the youth. However, Punjab Jail Minister Harjot Bains said "the scheme is to mislead people of the nation in the name of employment". The resolution was also backed by Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali. Agnipath schemeCongress Legislature Party leader Partap Singh Bajwa also backed the resolution and said several retired Army officers were also opposing the Agnipath recruitment scheme.
