Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to chair crucial meeting on rising Covid-19 cases

New Delhi, June 23: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will on Thursday hold a high-level review meeting with the core team of experts over increasing cases of Covid-19 India, it is learnt. Notably, India has been witnessing an increase in coronavirus cases over the last few weeks.

In Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Gujarat , there are more than 1,000 active cases.

On Thursday, India reported a single-day rise of 13,313 new Covid-19 infections, taking the tally to 4,33,44,958, while the active coronavirus cases have increased to 83,990, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Thursday. The death toll has jumped to 5,24,941 with 38 new deaths, says the data.

At a review meeting of INSACOG held last week, states/UTs were asked to submit "larger number" of samples for whole genome sequencing from districts and areas which have seen a surge in Covid-19 cases over a period of seven days.

It is learnt that Omicron and its sublineages, primarily BA. 2 and BA.2.38, as of now, seem to be behind the current rise in coronavirus cases.

Earlier, on June 13, Mansukh Mandaviya had chaired a meeting through video conferencing with Health Ministers and senior officials of States and Union Territories (UTs) to review the progress of the vaccination exercise HarGharDastak 2.0 campaign.

Highlighting increased case positivity in some districts and states and reduced Covid-19 testing, Mandaviya had stated that increased and timely testing will would early identification of Covid cases and help to curb the spread of the infection among the community.

He had urged states and UTs to continue and strengthen the surveillance and focus on genome sequencing for identifying new mutants/variants in the country. He stated that the five-fold strategy of Test, Track, Treat, Vaccination and Adherence to Covid Appropriate Behavior (CAB) needs to be continued and monitored by States/UTs.
