Google released a doodle on Saturday, paying tribute to Indian wrestler Hamida Banu - widely considered to be India’s first professional woman wrestler.

Google Doodle celebrates India's first female wrestler Hamida Banu

PTC News Desk: Google released a doodle on Saturday, paying tribute to Indian wrestler Hamida Banu - widely considered to be India’s first professional woman wrestler. 

The Google Doodle's description reads, “Hamida Banu was a trailblazer of her time, and her fearlessness is remembered throughout India and across the world. Outside of her sporting accomplishments, she will always be celebrated for staying true to herself."


Hamida Banu received international recognition for her victory in a wrestling match on May 4 1954, which lasted only 1 minute and 34 seconds. She defeated the famous wrestler Baba Pahalwan. Following the loss, he retired from professional wrestling.

The doodle is illustrated by Bengaluru-based guest artist Divya Negi. The illustration honours Indian wrestler Hamida Banu by featuring her in the foreground with 'Google' inscribed in the background, surrounded by local flora and fauna. 

About Hamida Banu

Hamida Banu is also known as 'Amazon of Aligarh'. Born into a family of wrestlers, Hamida Banu grew up practising the art of wrestling. She won over 300 competitions throughout her career, which spanned the 1940s and 1950s. 

Hamida Banu has international titles registered to her name. She also won a wrestling match against Russian wrestler Vera Chistilin in under two minutes. Hamida Banu became a household name following her victories.
