India slips to rank 102 in Global Hunger Index; falls below Bangladesh, Pakistan

In an alarming development, India has slipped to rank 102 in the Global Hunger Index. The country is positioned below Pakistan in the list of 117 countries and is ranked the lowest among South Asian countries, way behind other BRICS nations. At rank 59, South Africa was the lowest in the index.

South Asian countries are ranked between 66 and 94, while India is at rank 102. In 2015, India was ranked 93. Meanwhile, Pakistan, which was the only South Asian country ranked below India, has reached the 94th spot in the 2019 ranking. Bangladesh has registered major improvement and is now ranked 88.

Global Hunger Index (GHI) is based on a number of parameters, including undernourished children; those who have insufficient weight with respect to their height and mortality rate of those under the age of 5. The report said only 9.6% of children between 6 and 23 months are getting a proper diet. The report has praised Bangladesh for its progress in improving its nutritional standards for children.
