PTC Web Desk: With the Lok Sabha elections 2024 dates looming, the BJP is actively engaged in finalising seat-sharing arrangements with its NDA partners and making crucial decisions on whether to contest independently. A midnight meeting on Thursday, attended by top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party chief JP Nadda, was held to narrow down a list of candidates for the upcoming elections.

Candidate List for 100 Seats

A list of candidates for 100 seats, featuring Prime Minister Modi for Varanasi and Home Minister Shah for Gandhinagar, is expected to be released late Friday. This move is seen as an attempt by the BJP to exert pressure on its political rivals, particularly as the opposition struggles to finalise seat-sharing agreements.

Seat Decisions in Various States

Haryana

In Haryana, sources reveal that the BJP has chosen to go solo, sidelining the JJP (Jannayak Janta Party) led by Dushyant Chautala. Despite the JJP's assistance in the 2019 Assembly elections, where the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, but fell short of a majority, the decision to contest independently has been made.

Jharkhand

The BJP in Jharkhand plans to allocate one seat, possibly Giridih, to the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU). This strategic move reflects the BJP's effort to maintain alliances and secure a strong position in the state, where it currently holds 12 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats.

Uttar Pradesh

In the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is set to retain the majority of seats, leaving only six for its NDA allies. The Apna Dal (Sonelal), Rashtriya Lok Dal, Nishad Party, and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party will each be given one seat. With the BJP's dominant presence in UP politics, this decision aligns with the party's historical electoral success in the state.

Assam

The BJP has agreed to allocate three out of Assam's 14 seats to its allies, with the Asom Gana Parishad receiving two and the United People's Party Liberal securing one. This decision demonstrates the BJP's commitment to maintaining strong partnerships in the northeastern state.

Challenges and Unresolved Decisions

While decisions have been made in certain states, others, including Bihar, present challenges. The political landscape in Bihar has shifted with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) realigning with the BJP. Negotiations are ongoing with existing partners, such as rival factions of the Lok Janshakti Party, adding complexity to the seat allocation process.

In Maharashtra, the BJP is in discussions with the Shiv Sena and NCP factions led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, respectively. Striking a balance to ensure the satisfaction of all factions remains a challenge as their combined strength is crucial for the stability of the state government.
