TMC revolt deepens: Sushmita Dev quits party, resigns as Rajya Sabha MP; second such exit in a week

PTC News Desk: In another major setback to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Sushmita Dev quit party on Wednesday and resigned from the upper house, just a week after Sukhendu Sekhar Roy parted ways.

Previously a Congress Lok Sabha MP from Assam's Silchar, Sushmita left the party after she unsuccessfully contested in 2019 and joined Trinamool Congress in 2021. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the party's national spokesperson and later securing a Rajya Sabha berth.

In a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, she requested that her resignation be accepted with immediate effect.

This marks the second resignation from the party within a week. The first major blow came when Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stepped down as a Rajya Sabha MP after serving as the party's chief whip in the Upper House for 13 years.

In his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee, Roy strongly criticised the party, claiming that the people of West Bengal had rejected it because of alleged corruption, increasing crimes against women, administrative failures, and worsening conditions in sectors such as education, healthcare, industry, employment, and law and order.

He also praised the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying that voters had given the party a historic mandate in terms of seats. Roy added that the newly elected government had already started working on several initiatives aimed at the development and rebuilding of West Bengal, in line with its election promises.
