CID reaches Mamata Banerjee's home along with search warrant in signature forgery case

PTC News Desk: Officials of the Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday visited the Kolkata residence of Mamata Banerjee after Abhishek Banerjee failed to appear before the agency in connection with an alleged legislators' signature forgery case.

Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress and nephew of Mamata Banerjee, had been directed to appear before the CID at its south Kolkata headquarters on Tuesday. The summons was the third issued to him in connection with the investigation, with the agency reportedly setting a 5 p.m. deadline for his appearance.

According to reports, CID officials delivered the notice to Banerjee's aide, Subhasish, at his residence on Kalighat Road in south Kolkata on Monday. The agency said it had not received any response from the TMC MP regarding the summons. Officials also claimed they were unaware of his exact whereabouts, although he had been in New Delhi on Monday along with Mamata Banerjee for a key INDIA bloc meeting.

The case relates to alleged discrepancies in the signatures of several Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution concerning appointments to important Opposition positions in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Previously, Abhishek Banerjee had sought additional time on two occasions, citing health concerns and his engagements in New Delhi related to the INDIA bloc meeting. Following those requests, the CID issued a third summons on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court is scheduled to hear Banerjee's petition challenging the summons on June 10.
