Centre clears Bill to regulate online gaming; bans celebrity endorsements of betting apps
Once enacted, it will mark a turning point in India’s online gaming industry by introducing stricter oversight and accountability
PTC Web Desk: The Union Cabinet has approved a landmark Bill aimed at regulating the fast-growing online gaming sector in India, particularly platforms linked to betting and gambling. Cleared on Tuesday, the legislation introduces tough penalties, hefty fines, and provisions to ban such apps when required.
A significant feature of the Bill is the prohibition on celebrities and public figures from endorsing or promoting online gaming platforms associated with betting. The government believes this step will help protect younger audiences from the negative influence of gambling-linked promotions.
Officials stressed that the law is designed to mitigate the adverse social consequences of online betting games and safeguard vulnerable youth from exploitation. “The Bill is an important step to protect young people from harmful distractions and ensure a healthier gaming environment,” an official said.
The proposed legislation is expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha as early as tomorrow. Once enacted, it will mark a turning point in India’s online gaming industry by introducing stricter oversight and accountability.
Key Features of the Bill:
Regulation of online gaming platforms involving betting and gambling
Strong enforcement through penalties, fines, and potential bans
Ban on endorsements by celebrities and public personalities
Focus on protecting youth and minimizing social harm
The move comes amid rising concerns about addiction and financial risks associated with unregulated gaming apps. Experts say the Bill, if passed, will reshape India’s online gaming landscape, promoting responsible practices and reducing societal harm.
In addition, the Cabinet has cleared two major infrastructure projects:
Greenfield Airport in Kota-Boondi, Rajasthan: With an estimated investment of Rs 1,507 crore, the project aims to provide a modern facility for nearly 2 million passengers annually. The airport, long demanded by residents of Kota—an educational and industrial hub—is expected to be completed in two years.
Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha: A 110.875 km, 6-lane access-controlled highway project around Bhubaneswar has been approved at a cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore. The project, under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, will significantly ease traffic congestion in the region.
