PM Modi speaks with Iran President Pezeshkian, calls for dialogue and diplomacy amid escalating tensions

PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed India's deep concern over escalating tensions in the region, emphasising the urgent need for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy.

In a social media post PM Modi said he discussed the “serious situation in the region” with Pezeshkian and highlighted the humanitarian impact of the ongoing escalation.

"Had a conversation with Iranian President, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, to discuss the serious situation in the region. Expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure," PM Modi said.

"The safety and security of Indian nationals, along with the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, remain India’s top priorities. Reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability and urged dialogue and diplomacy," he added.

Reaffirming India’s long-standing stance, Narendra Modi said India remains committed to peace and stability in the region and urged all sides to resolve tensions through dialogue and diplomacy.

This is the first contact at the leadership level between India and Iran since fighting began between Iran and the United States–Israel alliance on February 28.

Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told Parliament on March 9 that staying in touch with Iran’s leadership had become “obviously difficult” under the current situation.
