Two killed as four-storey building collapses in Delhi’s Welcome area; several still feared trapped
Fire tenders along with disaster response teams deployed for rescue operations; 4 rescued so far
PTC Web Desk: A tragic building collapse in Delhi’s Janta Mazdoor Colony on Saturday morning claimed two lives and left at least eight others injured, with several people still feared trapped under the debris. The four-storey residential building, located under the jurisdiction of Welcome Police Station, came crashing down around 7.45 am.
According to officials, at least 10 members of a family were inside the building at the time of the collapse, along with a few nearby residents who may also be trapped. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed the recovery of two bodies—a man and a woman—from the rubble. Their bodies have been sent to GTB Hospital for further procedures.
Rescue efforts are ongoing with the deployment of seven fire tenders and multiple rescue teams at the site. Emergency responders are working to clear the debris and locate any survivors.
“We received a call about the building collapse at around 7 am. Seven fire tenders are on-site, and rescue operations are in full swing,” a senior police officer said. Residents of the area described the terrifying moment the building gave way.
This incident comes just a day after another building collapse in the Pul Mithai area near Azad Market in North Delhi, where three commercial buildings caved in around 2 am on Friday. A 45-year-old man lost his life in that collapse, which occurred within the "influence zone" of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) tunneling project for the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor.
The DMRC has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family and said prior warnings had been issued, declaring the buildings unsafe. The structures, aged around 30 years, were used as storage and trading spaces. Fortunately, due to the timing of the incident, only one person was present inside.
