Faridabad tragedy: Rescue operation ends in tragedy as two-year-old dies after being trapped in borewell for 10 hours

PTC News Desk: A rescue operation in Faridabad ended in tragedy after a two year old girl died 10 hours after she fell into a 200-feet-deep borewell in Sihi village on Sunday evening. The girl was pulled out of the borewell at around 4 am and rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

“We have kept the body in the mortuary. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of her death,” said a senior police officer.

Teams from Haryana Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Municipal Corporation and Health Department joined the rescue operation to save the girl.

An NDRF official said the team received information about the incident around 8 pm on Sunday and reached the spot from Ghaziabad at about 9 pm. By then, other rescue teams were already working at the site.

Initially, rescuers could hear the girl crying from inside the borewell, but the sound stopped after some time. The equipment brought by the NDRF team did not work effectively, so a special tool was made at the site with the help of a local car mechanic.

SDRF officials said the borewell had been unused for several years and had water at a depth of about 125 feet, making the rescue difficult. The girl was trapped upside down at around 200 feet. After a long rescue effort, teams managed to pull her out by her legs, but she was found unresponsive.

The incident has angered residents of Sector 8, who questioned why the abandoned borewell had not been properly secured. They said the accident could have been prevented if the borewell had been sealed safely.

Sanjeev Kumar, Executive Engineer of the Faridabad Municipal Corporation, said the borewell had been covered with a lid around 15 years ago. He said the civic body had not been informed that the lid had been removed.

He added that the matter would be investigated and action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence.

The girl's father, Ramdin, said the borewell belonged to the Faridabad Municipal Corporation and had been closed for around 15 years. He claimed that its lid had been removed a few days before the incident.

According to the family, Neha fell into the borewell while playing with other children nearby. A tractor was parked close to the borewell, and the children had climbed onto it while playing. Neha reportedly slipped from the tractor and fell into the open borewell.
