Chandigarh head constable shot dead at home: Minor son detained after conflicting statements
PTC Web Desk: A 42-year-old head constable posted with the Chandigarh Police was shot dead inside his home in Sector 22 Friday morning. The police have detained his 17-year-old son after finding inconsistencies in his account of the incident.
The deceased, identified as Nitin, was posted in the accounts branch at the Police Headquarters in Sector 9. The police said they received information about the shooting after neighbours heard a gunshot coming from the house.
A police team from Sector 17 police station reached the residence and found Nitin lying injured on a bed. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A country-made pistol has been recovered from the house.
Son's statement raises suspicion
During the initial inquiry, Nitin's teenage son told the police that another person had entered the house, shot his father and escaped.
However, investigators reportedly found discrepancies when the boy was questioned further. His version of events changed at different stages of the questioning, following which the police took him into custody.
The police said the son and his mother were at home when the shooting took place. Investigators are now working to establish exactly what happened inside the house and who fired the weapon.
Neighbours heard argument before gunshot
The incident took place at around 9 am. According to neighbours, there had been noise and an argument inside the house shortly before the gunshot was heard.
After hearing the firing, residents alerted the police control room. The Sector 17 police team subsequently reached the spot, cordoned off the premises and began collecting evidence.
Investigators are speaking to neighbours and other family members to establish the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
Minor was earlier involved in Thar collision case
The police are also looking into an earlier case involving Nitin's minor son. According to investigators, the teenager had allegedly been involved in a collision involving a Thar vehicle in the Manimajra area a few days ago.
Officials are checking whether that incident has any connection with Friday's shooting. No link has been established so far.

SSP Kanwardeep Kaur visits crime scene
Senior police officers, including Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, visited the residence following the incident.
The police have cordoned off the area and collected forensic evidence from the scene. The recovered country-made pistol is also being examined as part of the investigation.
