PTC Web Desk: In a major breakthrough, five persons have been arrested in Kolkata's New Town area in connection with the sensational murder of gangster Chandan Mishra, who was shot dead inside a Patna hospital’s ICU on July 17. The arrests were made during a coordinated raid by the Patna Police and the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) early Saturday morning.

The accused were nabbed from a flat in a residential complex within the satellite township of New Town, where they were reportedly hiding after fleeing Patna. A senior police officer revealed that four out of the five arrested individuals were directly involved in the murder, while the role of the fifth suspect—whether as an accomplice or shelter provider—is currently under investigation.

"The mobile tower location of the accused helped us trace their whereabouts. All five were tracked to the New Town flat. The Bihar Police will now seek transit remand from a local court to take custody," the officer said.

Chandan Mishra, a convicted gangster serving a life sentence for the 2011 murder of businessman Rajendra Keshri, was recently out on 15-day parole for medical treatment. His parole was due to expire on July 18, just a day after he was gunned down inside the ICU of a private hospital in Patna.

Initial investigations indicate that the murder was part of a gang rivalry. A CCTV video of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows five armed assailants entering the hospital’s ICU and shooting Mishra at close range.

Chandan, a resident of Bihar’s Buxar district, had a long criminal record with over 20 serious cases against him, including murder and armed robberies targeting banks and jewellery shops. He was earlier arrested by the STF in Kolkata in 2014 and was moved between multiple jails, including Buxar and Bhagalpur Central Jail, during his incarceration.
