Five Indian nationals kidnapped in Mali; MEA engages in high-level efforts for their safe release

PTC Web Desk: In a concerning development, five Indian nationals have been abducted in Mali, prompting immediate diplomatic intervention by India to ensure their safe return. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the kidnapping on Monday, stating that the Indian Embassy in Bamako is working closely with Malian authorities and the company involved to secure their release.
The incident reportedly took place on November 6 in a region of Mali known for its history of armed attacks and kidnappings by militant groups. The Embassy of India in Mali posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), confirming the abduction and assuring that efforts are underway at the highest levels of government.
“The Embassy is aware of the unfortunate incident of kidnapping of five of our nationals on 6 November 2025. The Embassy has been working closely with the authorities and the company concerned to secure their safe release as quickly as possible,” the post read, tagging @MEAIndia and @PMOIndia to indicate direct involvement from senior officials.
According to sources in New Delhi, the Indian Embassy in Bamako remains in constant communication with Malian security agencies, while the MEA headquarters coordinates with other diplomatic missions and international partners who have knowledge of the region’s security situation.
An MEA spokesperson said, “All necessary efforts are being made to ensure the early and safe release of our nationals. The government is monitoring the situation closely and continuously.”
The region of Mali where the abduction occurred has long been affected by insurgent activity and instability, with several instances of foreign nationals being targeted in the past. The MEA has urged Indian citizens working or residing in conflict-prone areas abroad to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by the embassy.
