Food safety body issued notices to Six energy drinks brand over misleading claims
In an Instagram post, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said it has issued notices to several brands that market their products as "energy drinks" for alleged violations related to branding, labelling and promotional claims.
PTC News Desk: The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) on Wednesday issued notices to six energy drinks brands. The six brands named by the food safety watchdog are: Red Bull Energy Drink, PepsiCo's Adrenaline Rush Energy Drink, Reliance Consumer Products' Campa Energy Drink Gold Boost, Sting Energy Drink, Hell Energy and Coca-Cola-backed Monster Energy.
In an Instagram post, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said it has issued notices to several brands that market their products as "energy drinks" for alleged violations related to branding, labelling and promotional claims.
The food regulator said there is currently no specific standard or officially recognised category for "energy drinks" under its regulations. It alleged that some brands have been using the term "energy drink" on their packaging and labels even though no such category has been formally notified.
FSSAI also clarified that its food category system is meant only for classifying products and cannot be used as a product name or label.
In addition, the regulator objected to several promotional claims made by these brands, including statements such as "vitalises body and mind", "enhances focus", "boosts energy levels" and "helps with general weakness". According to FSSAI, such functional or therapeutic claims are not allowed for food products under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related regulations.
