Monsoon reaches Delhi, heavy rain lashes Mumbai as IMD forecasts more showers across North India
Monsoon update: The southwest monsoon has moved further across the country, bringing rain to several more states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
According to the weather department, the monsoon has now covered more parts of Gujarat, the remaining areas of Uttar Pradesh, the entire Delhi region, most parts of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, along with some areas of Rajasthan.
The IMD said the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through 22°N/60°E, 22°N/65°E, Porbandar, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Neemuch, Tonk, Bhiwani, Bhatinda and extends up to 32.5°N/70°E as of July 2.
Officials added that weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to move further over the next two to three days. It is expected to cover additional parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.
The IMD also confirmed that the monsoon officially reached Delhi on Thursday. The city received rain after the monsoon's onset date of June 27, bringing relief from the humid weather.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall affected both Delhi and Mumbai on Thursday morning, causing traffic disruptions and slowing daily life. In Mumbai, train services on the Central Railway route were delayed because heavy rain reduced visibility.
The weather department issued a red alert nowcast for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, warning of moderate to intense rainfall at isolated places for three hours until 10:45 am.
Residents in these areas have been advised to stay away from weak structures, avoid waterlogged locations, and keep a safe distance from trees and electric poles during the rain. People have also been asked to follow the latest weather advisories.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned that Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy showers possible during the night and into Friday morning. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph are also expected in several parts of the city.
