Ambala borewell accident: Rescue operation ends in heartbreak as 4-year-old Nirvair Singh brought out dead after 21 hours

PTC News Desk: A 21-year rescue operation that had been carried out to save a four-year-old boy who fell into a 220-feet borewell in Haryana's Ambala district ended in a heartbreak as the child was declared dead after he was pulled out.

Nirvair Singh was taken out from the borewell at around 3.40 am after the multi-agency operation that began on Tuesday morning. He was immediately shifted in an ambulance to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment.

A doctor at the hospital said the child was brought dead when he was taken to the emergency ward. The child reportedly fell into the open borewell around 7 am in Dhaneora village while he was in the fields with his uncle and cousin.

According to officials, Nirbhay had gone to the fields with his family members when he accidentally slipped into the uncovered borewell, which had been dug for a tubewell.

After hearing the child's cries for help, the family immediately alerted nearby villagers and informed the police. The district administration was soon informed and rescue teams were rushed to the spot.

Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar and other officials quickly reached the spot after the incident. Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF and the Army then started a large-scale operation to save the child.

Tomar said the borewell was around nine inches wide and 220 feet deep. He added that authorities acted immediately after receiving information and deployed emergency teams to the site.

Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij also visited the location on Tuesday evening to review the rescue efforts and meet the child's family.

The deputy commissioner said police had been instructed to take action against those responsible for leaving the borewell open.

Urging farmers to be more careful, Tomar said such accidents can be avoided if borewells are properly covered and sealed after use.
