PTC News Desk: The craze for special or “fancy” vehicle registration numbers reached a new peak in Haryana this week, with the number HR-88-B-8888 attracting a record bid of ₹1.17 crore. The bidder, identified only as Sudhir Kumar, paid ₹10,000 to join the auction and has one week to deposit the full amount. Only then will the number officially be allotted. Although some reports claim this is the highest price ever paid for a fancy number in India, it has not been independently confirmed.

This week, HR-88-B-8888 drew the most attention, with 45 applications, and had a starting price of ₹50,000. The code HR-88 indicates that the number belongs to the Kundli RTO in Sonipat district. The demand for fancy numbers has grown across India in recent years.

In April 2025, a businessman in Kerala bought the number KL-07-DG-0007 for ₹45.99 lakh for his Lamborghini worth around ₹4 crore. The number ‘0007’ is considered lucky by many and is linked to the James Bond character.

People pay huge amounts for these numbers for reasons such as numerology, personal dates, or simply the desire for exclusivity.

Earlier, in August, the number ‘0001’ from the CH01-DA series in Chandigarh was sold for ₹36.43 lakh, even though the base price was ₹50,000, in an e-auction held by the UT’s Registering and Licensing Authority.
