PTC Web Desk:  Petrol and diesel prices increased once again across the country on Saturday, making fuel costlier for consumers for the third time this month. State-run oil companies raised petrol prices by 87 paise per litre and diesel prices by 91 paise per litre amid rising global crude oil prices and tensions in West Asia.

In Delhi, petrol is now being sold at Rs 99.51 per litre, up from Rs 98.64, while diesel prices increased from Rs 91.58 to Rs 92.49 per litre.

The latest revision comes just a day after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas assured citizens that there is no shortage of fuel in the country. The ministry urged people not to panic and buy fuel only according to their needs.

In a statement, the ministry said petrol and diesel supplies remain stable across India and oil companies are continuously monitoring distribution to avoid shortages at retail outlets. It also appealed for public cooperation during the ongoing high-demand period.

Earlier this month, fuel prices had already seen two major increases. On May 16, petrol and diesel prices were raised by around Rs 3 per litre in many cities. Another hike of nearly 90 paise followed on May 19. With Saturday’s increase, fuel prices have gone up by almost Rs 5 per litre in just a few days.

The continuous increase in fuel prices is expected to affect household budgets as well as transportation and logistics costs. Experts believe that rising fuel rates may eventually push up the prices of essential goods and food items in the coming weeks.

Officials say the price hikes are necessary because India imports nearly 85 per cent of its crude oil needs. Any rise in global crude prices directly impacts domestic fuel rates. Concerns over possible supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have also added pressure on international oil markets.

Meanwhile, CNG prices have also become expensive in several cities. In Delhi, the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been increased by Re 1 per kg. After the latest revision, CNG is now available at Rs 81.09 per kg at Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) stations in the national capital.

The fresh increase in petrol, diesel and CNG prices is likely to add to inflation concerns and increase the financial burden on commuters and businesses alike.
