PTC Web Desk: A controversy has erupted at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 after Galgotias University came under fire for exhibiting a quadruped robotic dog that critics claim is a Chinese-made product rather than an indigenous innovation. The issue has triggered sharp political reactions and intensified debate over India’s technological self-reliance narrative.

What sparked the controversy?

The dispute centres around a four-legged robotic dog displayed by Galgotias University under the label “Orion” during the summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The robot quickly became a crowd-puller, drawing attention for its agility and interactive features, including greeting visitors and performing programmed movements. Videos of the machine went viral across social media platforms.

However, technology enthusiasts and online observers soon identified the robot as the Go2 model manufactured by Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics. Allegations surfaced that the university had presented a commercially available Chinese product as a domestic technological achievement.

Political reactions intensify

The matter soon entered the political arena. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the summit, describing it as a “disorganised PR spectacle.” He questioned the government’s commitment to nurturing indigenous innovation, alleging that instead of showcasing Indian technological capabilities, foreign products were being promoted.

The Congress party further accused the Centre of undermining India’s global credibility in the artificial intelligence sector. Party leaders also targeted Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alleging that misrepresentation of foreign technology as Indian innovation had damaged the country’s image. They claimed that such incidents weaken the broader narrative of self-reliance under flagship initiatives like “Make in India.”

University’s clarification

Amid mounting criticism, Galgotias University issued a clarification denying any wrongdoing. The institution stated that it had not claimed the robot to be its proprietary invention and asserted that the machine was displayed as part of a broader demonstration of robotics capabilities. According to the university, no attempt was made to mislead attendees about the product’s origin.

Reports of stall removal

As per reports, the university was asked to vacate its exhibition space following the controversy. The reported action came after allegations of misrepresentation gained traction online and in political discourse.

The episode has sparked wider discussions about transparency in showcasing technology at high-profile national events. As India positions itself as a global AI hub, questions around authenticity, domestic innovation, and ethical representation have taken centre stage.
