PTC Web Desk: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead at the state Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Rushed to hospital, declared dead

According to preliminary information, Dhankar was found with a gunshot injury. He was immediately taken to Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Hospital official Dr  Pradip Bhowmik said Dhankar was brought to the hospital around noon without any signs of life.

"He was brought to the hospital at around 12 pm. He had no pulse, no blood pressure and no signs of life. We performed CPR for more than 40 minutes but could not revive him. He was declared dead at 12.48 pm. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination," he said.

The police said the investigation is in its initial stages. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death  and the findings of the post-mortem and official inquiry are awaited.

Anurag Dhankar took charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura in May 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Before becoming the state's police chief, he served as Director General (Intelligence) in Tripura.

During his career, Dhankar also served with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled several high-profile investigations. He was widely regarded as an experienced and respected police officer.

His sudden death has come as a shock to the police department and government officials, with many expressing grief over the loss of the senior IPS officer.
