PTC Web Desk: At least seven persons lost their lives and more than 10 sustained injuries after a passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora district on Tuesday, police officials said.

The accident took place in the Bhikiyasain area when the bus, travelling from Dwarahat in Almora to Ramnagar in Nainital district, veered off the road after the driver reportedly lost control. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendra Pincha said the vehicle fell into a gorge nearly six km ahead of Bhikiyasain.

According to the police, the bus was carrying 18 to 19 passengers at the time of the mishap. Six persons died on the spot, while another passenger succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.

Following the incident, local police teams and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the site and launched rescue and relief operations. SSP Pincha said 12 persons, including the driver, were pulled out of the gorge with injuries and shifted to hospital for treatment.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a post shared in Hindi on Facebook, he said he was closely monitoring the situation and remained in constant touch with district administration officials.

“I pray to God for the peace of the departed souls and for strength to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss. I also wish a speedy recovery for all the injured,” the Chief Minister said. He added that the injured passengers had been admitted to nearby hospitals, while those in critical condition were referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment.
