AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal offers to give up security amid cops shortage, urges deployment for public safety
Seechewal said he has been receiving reports about a shortage of police personnel and that the problem has become more serious as crime continues to rise.
PTC News Desk: Amid rising concerns over the law-and-order situation in Punjab and a shortage of police personnel, Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal has asked Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav to transfer the police officers assigned to his security detail to local police stations.
In a letter to the DGP, Seechewal said that six police personnel are currently deployed for his security. Three of them are stationed in his native village, Seechewal, while the remaining officers accompany him during his travels.
He pointed out that eight thefts were reported in his village in a single night, including the theft of electricity wires. He said he had already informed the police about these incidents. He also expressed concern over the rise in crimes at religious places in Sultanpur Lodhi.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the Chief Minister, the Governor, the Deputy Commissioners, and the Senior Superintendents of Police of Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts.
Seechewal said he has been receiving reports about a shortage of police personnel and that the problem has become more serious as crime continues to rise. He suggested that the six officers currently assigned to his security could instead be posted at police stations, where they could help maintain law and order and prevent crime.
He specifically requested that three of the six personnel be deployed at the Sultanpur Lodhi and Lohian Khas police stations, which he said are facing staff shortages. He also said the growing drug problem and related crimes in the area require more police personnel.
