Panic on Punjab pilgrimage bus: The Amritsar Rural police have arrested two youths for allegedly attacking a bus carrying devotees under the Punjab government's Chief Minister Teerth Yatra Scheme. The accused allegedly stopped the bus, abused passengers and attempted to assault them.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
According to the police complaint, the bus was carrying devotees to the Wagah Border as part of the Chief Minister Teerth Yatra Scheme when two youths allegedly blocked its path by parking their vehicle in front of it. The accused allegedly argued with passengers, used abusive language and tried to get into a physical altercation, creating panic among those travelling in the bus.
The complaint further states that the two youths stepped out of their vehicle carrying a baseball bat and a gandasa (traditional sharp-edged weapon) and allegedly attempted to attack the bus.
Around 45 devotees were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The Police said nearly 80% of the passengers were women, while around 20% were elderly. During the commotion, a differently abled devotee was allegedly pushed to the ground, adding to the fear and chaos inside the bus.
The police have taken both accused into custody and are examining CCTV footage from the area to establish the sequence of events. Officials said further action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the investigation.
