Amritpal Singh sent to judicial custody for 5 days in Ajnala violence case; next hearing on April 30
MP Amritpal Singh has been remanded to five-day judicial custody in the Ajnala police station violence case after his police remand ended. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 30
Amritpal Singh judicial custody: A local court on Saturday remanded Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh to five days of judicial custody in connection with the Ajnala police station violence case.
Singh’s two-day police remand ended earlier in the day, following which he was produced before the SDM court in Ajnala via video conferencing.
Defence counsel Harpal Singh Khara confirmed that the police did not seek an extension of Singh’s custodial interrogation. In the absence of a fresh remand request, the court ordered that he be sent to judicial custody.
Officials said Singh will be transferred back to the Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, where he has been lodged in connection with multiple cases. The matter is now scheduled for its next hearing on April 30.
The case pertains to the February 2023 Ajnala incident, during which supporters of Singh allegedly stormed a police station, leading to clashes with law enforcement authorities.
During earlier proceedings, the Amritsar Rural Police had sought a 15-day police remand to recover weapons and vehicles allegedly used during the incident. Investigators had also expressed the need to seize the vehicle in which a copy of Guru Granth Sahib was reportedly transported to the police station premises.
However, the court had granted only a two-day remand at the previous hearing, which concluded on Saturday, paving the way for his transfer to judicial custody.
